Cargo volumes surge at world’s busiest airports: ACI

The world’s busiest airports handled more than 124 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2024, a year-over-year increase of 8.4 per cent, according to new data released by Airports Council International (ACI) World.

In its preview of the 2024 rankings, ACI said cargo volumes are up 3.9 per cent compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The Top 10 cargo airports accounted for nearly 26 per cent of global air freight traffic last year, handling 32.3 million metric tonnes—a 9.3 per cent increase over 2023 and a 9.5 per cent gain over 2019.

ACI attributes the growth in air freight to robust e-commerce demand, disruptions in maritime shipping and falling jet fuel prices.

Hong Kong International Airport maintained its position as the world’s busiest cargo hub, followed by Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Memphis International Airport.

“Amid global challenges, the resilience of the world’s busiest airports shines. These hubs are vital arteries of trade, commerce, and connectivity,” said ACI World director general Justin Erbacci. “As air travel grows, ACI World stands ready to support its members, ensuring the smooth flow of people and goods that drive global economic, social and cultural progress.”
