WestJet Cargo outsources customs operations to TCE to boost efficiency and reduce costs

WestJet Cargo says outsourcing its customs processes to TCE has led to reduced costs, improved efficiency and better customer service, just months after the two companies signed a partnership agreement.

TCE is a specialized entity in air cargo operations. TCE supervises more than 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually, conducts over 500 audits and operates in more than 230 airports worldwide.

“WestJet Cargo made the decision to outsource its customs processes last November and, given the increasing complexity the air cargo industry has seen in this area over the past four months, our decision could not have come at a better time,” said Julius Mooney, director – cargo commercial at WestJet Cargo.

TCE took over customs responsibilities six weeks after the Nov. 18, 2024, agreement. The service provider was granted access to WestJet Cargo’s SmartKargo and CHAMP customs portal, enabling it to oversee international cargo messaging and reporting into and out of Canada.

TCE’s work includes monitoring and correcting customs data, handling regulatory communications and leading investigations and appeals related to customs fines.

“The complete implementation was accomplished within six weeks, which is remarkably swift for such a substantial operation,” said Sarah Scheibe, managing director of TCE. “We tailored a bespoke solution for WestJet Cargo that aligns with the airline’s unique requirements and system configurations.”

Mooney praised the partnership, citing notable savings and operational benefits: “TCE’s highly professional support has taken the operational strain and distraction of customs matters off our Cargo Leads… judging by the money we have saved so far in customs fines, by the end of this year, we could be looking at having to pay out less than a fifth of what was paid in 2024.”
