Cargill opens canola processing facility in Regina to boost domestic capacity

Cargill says its new canola processing facility in Regina is now operational, expanding domestic processing capacity and strengthening market access for Western Canadian farmers.

The company said the plant can process up to one million metric tonnes of canola annually, producing oil for food and renewable fuels as well as high-protein meal for animal feed. The facility will serve growers across Saskatchewan and Western Manitoba.

“This facility strengthens our ability to connect Canadian farmers to growing global demand for food and renewable fuels,” said Jeff Vassart, president, Cargill Canada. “By expanding processing capacity in Saskatchewan, we’re creating more opportunities for farmers while helping ensure Canada remains competitive in rapidly evolving global markets.”

Cargill said increasing demand for lower-carbon energy solutions is driving greater use of canola as a renewable feedstock for biofuels. The Regina facility is expected to support that demand while allowing more of the crop to be processed domestically rather than exported as raw seed.

The company said the site includes features designed to improve delivery efficiency for farmers, including dual receiving lanes, appointment scheduling and streamlined logistics. It also supports programs such as Cargill PowerCanola aimed at helping growers access emerging market opportunities.

Located at Saskatchewan’s Global Transportation Hub, the facility provides rail access to domestic and export markets and supports more than 100 jobs through full-time positions and contractors.

Cargill said the investment is part of its broader efforts to strengthen Canada’s agricultural supply chains. The company also operates canola processing facilities in Camrose, Alta., and Clavet, Sask.
