New enforcement measures aim to reduce dangerous driving in Alberta 

Alberta is introducing new measures to improve road safety and reduce high‑risk driving across the province. Transportation and economic corridors minister Devin Dreeshen said the plan will expand commercial vehicle inspections, increase automated enforcement and give sheriffs more authority to target dangerous behaviour on highways.

The province will add 70 automated traffic enforcement sites, boost impaired driving investigations and deploy new tools to monitor repeat offenders. Officials say the measures will lower collision rates, strengthen carrier compliance and reduce costs for shippers and logistics operators moving goods through Alberta’s freight network.

Since October, Alberta has issued 443 administrative penalties and removed 20 unsafe carriers from provincial roads. Additionally, 13 of those were identified as chameleon carriers that attempted to evade oversight by changing names or jurisdictions. The penalties resulted in 6 carriers being removed from the International Registration Plan for misrepresenting their jurisdiction.

The province also took action against Conquer Transportation Inc. after a collision that resulted in a fatality in Manitoba. Investigators found willful and sustained non‑compliance and determined the carrier was using chameleon practices to avoid enforcement. Alberta issued $16,500 in administrative penalties and downgraded the carrier’s safety fitness rating to unsatisfactory, shutting down its operations immediately.
