CN expands hybrid locomotive testing

CN is moving ahead with its hybrid‑locomotive development program, adding more units to testing as the railway works to modernize yard power and cut emissions across its North American network.

The company now has three hybrid locomotives on test and is converting two more to hybrid‑electric platforms with AC traction technology by late 2026. CN said the work builds on a pilot project that delivered up to 50 per cent better fuel efficiency, fewer engine‑related failures, higher horsepower and reduced idling.

Patrick Whitehead, executive vice‑president and chief operating officer, said repowering existing yard units is helping CN improve efficiency while supporting customer service and long‑term sustainability.

“This CN-led pilot represents another milestone in our sustainability journey and focus on emerging technologies. We believe that this hybrid system, if successful, could substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our yard operations, while maintaining our commitment to customers and communities across our network,” he said.

New features include solid‑state batteries, a 2.8MWh battery system paired with an 800HP Tier 4 engine, increased horsepower from 3,200 to 3,800 horsepower, and AC traction motors fitted into a DC motor frame. CN said testing in hot and extreme cold conditions has helped refine performance in day‑to‑day operations.

The project involves teams across CN’s mechanical, transportation, procurement and sustainability groups as the railway works to shape the next generation of yard power.
