GLS Canada opens automated parcel hub in Vaughan

GLS Canada has begun parcel operations at its new Vaughan, Ont., hub, bringing the company’s parcel, freight and logistics services together under one facility.

The 191,000-square-foot site includes the first automated parcel sorting facility in the GLS North American network. Located in the Greater Toronto Area, the hub features a 12,000-foot automated sorting system designed to process four times the volume of the company’s previous location.

According to the company, parcels are scanned and routed through a network of sensors, conveyors and automated controls, allowing shipments to be directed to thousands of destinations across Canada with approximately 99 per cent accuracy.

“We are incredibly proud of our history and the dedicated people who built this company from the ground up,” said Rick Barnes, president and CEO of GLS Canada. “The Vaughan hub reflects months of hard work and collaboration across GLS Canada.”

The facility includes 75 dock doors, including 33 dedicated to parcel operations, and more than 3.7 kilometres of automated conveyor and sorting technology. The company said the site also incorporates energy-saving measures such as LED lighting, motion sensors, automated conveyor controls and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
