Quebec Transport Minister releases study on long distance trucking

A study unveiled by Quebec’s Transport Minister Julie Boulet paints the portrait of long-distance trucking in the province and analyzes in depth truck traffic between Quebec and its trade partners.

A high percentage of truck traffic in the province is linked to exterior commerce, says the study. Of 240,000 long-distance truck movements within Quebec during a representative week in autumn 1999, some 44 % of trips were for interprovincial or U.S. trade, 54 % were for commerce within the province and 2 % were just transiting Quebec territory.

The study also showed that the heaviest travelled routes for exterior commerce in Quebec were highways 20 and 401.
Some 58 % of the total mileage run by long-distance truckers in Quebec is in fact outside the Quebec road system.

The Montreal region, meanwhile, sees 152,000 trucks route from or through it on a weekly basis, or 63 % of total truck movements in the province.

Further information on the study is available at : www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca.
