Effective Nov. 23, Memphis-based FedEx Express will discontinue, in a cost-cutting move, its FedEx Extra Hours service, a specialized offering that extended pickup times by up to three hours for major-markets or large customers.
Manufacturing, high-tech and publishing companies, among others needing later cutoff times for critical shipments, were expected to benefit most from the service.
A FedEx spokesman said the need for the service has diminished with a slowed economy.
As a departure from recent years, FedEx Express will keep its money-back guarantees on its cheaper FedEx 2Day and FedEx Express Saver services instead of temporarily suspending them in mid- December, said the company.
But they will temporarily suspend money-back guarantees for FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery packages tendered Dec. 17-28.
Analysts say the money-back guarantees announcement may indicate that more packages are being deferred from express air to ground as the economy slows.
