Prince Rupert Port Authority recognizes Green Wave leaders for sustainable shipping practices

The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) has honoured five companies with its 2024 Green Wave Award for outstanding efforts in environmental sustainability.

This year’s recipients include intermodal carriers COSCO and Yang Ming, liquid-bulk shippers SK Shipping and Navigator Gas LLC and BC Ferries, which provides passenger and vehicle transport along the coast.

PRPA also honoured nine vessels for implementing underwater noise mitigation technology, including the container ships YM PLUM, YM UNIFORM, YM MUTUALITY, and MOL CHARISMA; LPG carriers BOREAL VOYAGER and HLS DIAMOND; dry-bulk ships XH SQUARE LEG and YANGZE 16; and the cruise vessel ROALD AMUNDSEN.

“The Prince Rupert Port Authority commends the 2024 Green Wave Award recipients for their commitment to decarbonizing the global shipping and passenger transportation sectors and lessening the impacts of their operations on the environment,” said Shaun Stevenson, president and CEO of PRPA. “We are also encouraged to see a record number of vessels calling on the Prince Rupert Gateway that are activating measures to reduce underwater noise.”

Launched in 2013, the Green Wave program provides reduced harbour fees to commercial vessels that voluntarily meet higher environmental standards for air emissions and underwater noise. Participation has grown steadily, with 316 vessel calls qualifying in 2024—up 33 per cent from 2019.

The program forms a key part of PRPA’s environmental stewardship strategy, supporting its goal to cut carbon intensity at the Prince Rupert Gateway by 30 per cent in five years and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
