Canadian Adidas DC wins award of excellence

TORONTO, Ontario–Ware Malcomb, an international design firm, has completed a new Adidas Group Canada distribution centre in the County of Brant, Ontario, Canada.  Ware Malcomb provided architectural design services for the project, which is situated on 82 acres within the County of Brant’s 121-acre 403 Business Park development.

The project won the Industrial Development of the Year award in the 14th Annual NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association of Greater Toronto’s Real Estate Excellence Awards, held on April 15, 2015.

In recognition and appreciation of Adidas Group Canada and the founder of the original German sportswear company, Adolph Dassler, one of the roads within the Brant 403 Business Park was appropriately named “Adi Dassler Way.”

The new facility is part of Adidas Group Canada’s expansion strategy in Ontario to accommodate the company’s four brands – Adidas, Rockport, Reebok and TaylorMade. With the completion of the new distribution centre, the facility has the capacity to allow Adidas Group Canada to double its workforce from its previous facility in nearby Brantford.

Adidas Group Canada’s 64,064 square metre (1,012,500 square foot) build-to-suit facility includes a truck loading area on the east side, complete with 48 loading docks and two drive-in doors, with the west elevation providing an additional four truck docks and one drive-in door. The building and site have been designed to accommodate a fully operational double-loaded truck loading facility, if required.

The pre-cast Flexwall facility also includes a light manufacturing area and 2,229 square metres (24,000 square feet) of interior office space. The south wall is constructed of metal siding to allow for future expansion.

The warehouse portions of the distribution centre boast a 38’ clear height to accommodate the highly complex automated material handling system and racking system.

As one of the Top 3 most sustainable companies worldwide, Adidas Group Canada set out to build a facility that met its sustainable initiatives. The facility includes a 90,000 square foot solar-ready roof structure that is structurally reinforced for 500 KW of solar panels in the near future. The building also has energy efficient systems and lighting controls. The project’s other notable innovations include an advanced fire suppression system and a fully automated and elevated conveyor system.

“This project involved an incredible collaboration between Adidas Group, the county, broker, developers, contractor and designers team,” said Frank Di Roma, Regional Director of Ware Malcomb’s Toronto office. “We are so pleased with the result and are confident Adidas Group Canada will enjoy many productive years to come in their modern new distribution centre.”

The general contractor for the project was Belrock Design-Build Inc.
