G7 allies condemn Iran, call for halt to Strait of Hormuz disruptions

Canada and six key allies are condemning Iran over attacks on commercial shipping and warning of global consequences as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a joint statement, leaders from Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan denounced what they described as attacks on unarmed commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities. The leaders also pointed to what they called the “de facto closure” of the vital shipping corridor by Iranian forces.

The statement calls on Iran to immediately cease threats, including the laying of mines and drone and missile attacks, and to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.

“Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law,” the leaders said, warning that interference with global shipping and energy supply chains poses a threat to international peace and security.

They also called for an immediate moratorium on attacks targeting civilian infrastructure.

The group said the impacts of the disruptions would be felt worldwide, particularly by vulnerable populations, as energy markets face growing instability.

The countries signalled they are prepared to support efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait and welcomed planning by other nations to safeguard maritime traffic.

They also backed a move by the International Energy Agency to authorize a coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves and said they would work with producing nations to boost output and stabilize markets.

The statement adds that support will be provided to the most affected countries through the United Nations and international financial institutions.

The leaders urged all states to respect international law and uphold freedom of navigation, calling maritime security a cornerstone of global prosperity and stability.
