Global e-commerce logistics market expected to grow despite U.S. trade policies: report

A new report predicts the global e-commerce logistics and e-fulfilment market will continue to surge in 2025, growing by 15.5 per cent despite trade uncertainty tied to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed policy changes.

According to the “e-Commerce Logistics & e-Fulfilment Market 2025” report from ResearchAndMarkets.com, the market has rebounded from a contraction in 2022 following the COVID-19 pandemic, returning to double-digit growth over the past two years. In 2024, the market was valued at US$569 billion, double its size from 2019.

The report links the strong growth to renewed consumer confidence, improved global economic conditions, continued adoption of digital infrastructure and a persistent shift toward online shopping.

“Although President Trump’s policies on trade and tariffs have introduced significant uncertainty into the market, the sector shows no signs of being blown off course,” said the report’s senior editor. “Consumer habits have transformed, and this will power domestic and cross-border e-commerce and e-fulfilment needs for years to come.”

Regionally, the Asia Pacific market outpaced both North America and Europe in terms of growth since 2020, recording an 11 per cent increase compared to 10 per cent for North America and eight per cent for Europe.

North America retained a narrow lead in overall e-commerce logistics activity into 2024, the report notes, with Asia Pacific following closely.

Global e-commerce sales reached US$3.85 trillion in 2024, a 15 per cent increase from the previous year.

Merger and acquisition activity remains strong as larger logistics firms seek to expand by acquiring smaller, specialized e-commerce players. Notable recent deals include:

  • DHL acquiring Inmar Supply Chain Solutions and Brandpath Group
  • Stord acquiring Pitney Bowes’ fulfilment activities
  • GLS acquiring e-Log
  • Bpost acquiring Staci

Although inflationary pressures lingered in 2024, real year-over-year growth in the logistics sector came in at nine per cent.
