Port of Montreal reports stable tonnage for 2024 despite challenges

The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) reported stable cargo volumes for 2024, handling 35.26 million tonnes of goods despite economic and operational hurdles, representing a slight 0.25 per cent decline compared to 2023.

“Even though the container segment is still down due to uncertainty over the stability of labour relations in the supply chain in recent years, and despite the challenges, the Port of Montreal’s overall results were stable in 2024 thanks to tremendous teamwork and great collaboration between the MPA and port partners. I thank them,” said Julie Gascon, MPA’s president and CEO.

Dry bulk cargo saw the strongest growth, rising nine per cent to 8.86 million tonnes, driven by a 25 per cent increase in grain shipments and an 11 per cent rise in sugar demand. Liquid bulk volumes remained stable at 13.62 million tonnes, while non-containerized goods returned to typical levels, totaling nearly 197,000 tonnes.

The container sector continued to struggle, with volumes down 3.88 per cent to 12.58 million tonnes. This decline reflects ongoing uncertainty in labour relations, which has contributed to a 12.6 per cent drop in container tonnage since 2022.

Despite these challenges, Gascon emphasized the port’s advantages, including market access, a balanced trade model and the dedication of its workforce. “The Port of Montreal is a resilient port, with all the advantages it needs to face adversity,” she said.

Full audited results will be presented at the MPA’s annual meeting in May.
