Port of Trois-Rivières sees cargo drop amid major infrastructure upgrades

Cargo traffic at the Port of Trois-Rivières fell 16.7 per cent in 2024 as the port underwent its largest construction project in history. A total of 3.5 million metric tonnes of cargo moved through the port, including 2.9 million metric tonnes of dry bulk, 274,000 metric tonnes of liquid bulk and 393,000 metric tonnes of general cargo.

The decline was expected as the port carried out major upgrades, including the reconstruction of Pier 17, the filling of the basin, the construction of a new Pier 16 and terminal expansions. Road improvements, underground infrastructure upgrades and a new gatehouse were also completed to enhance port access and traffic flow.

“Although significant, this drop in traffic was anticipated and planned for. The results achieved are in line with our forecasts and we are very pleased with them,” said Gaétan Boivin, president and CEO of the Port of Trois-Rivières, thanking port workers and partners for maintaining operations during construction.

The port also made strides in its On Course for 2030 strategic plan, unveiling an Atikamek artwork in First Nations Park and expanding its port collaboration with Montréal, Québec, Saguenay and Sept-Îles to strengthen maritime trade along the Saguenay and St. Lawrence Rivers.
