Report highlights benefits of student work placements in trucking, logistics

A new report says federal funding for student work placements is delivering measurable benefits for the trucking and logistics sector, while supporting Canada’s broader economic growth.

The study, THRC Driving Futures: Opening Doors for Youth Through Student Work Placements, from Trucking HR Canada outlines the impact of the Student Work Placement Program, which provides financial support to help post-secondary students secure paid work terms.

“We know how important this program is for both students who want work-integrated learning opportunities, and for trucking and logistics companies to access a pipeline of new workers,” said Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “But it goes further — supporting Canada’s ambitious plans for economic growth requires building the workforce that will power the supply chain and strengthen our country’s ability to compete globally.”

Since 2021, Trucking HR Canada has disbursed more than $8 million to support 250 employers, placed 1,670 students and helped create jobs that might not otherwise exist.

The report found more than 93 per cent of students were satisfied with their experience, while 87 per cent felt better prepared to find a job after graduation. Among employers, 90 per cent reported satisfaction with their student hires, and 82 per cent said they would consider hiring them in the future.
