Harbinger launches medium-duty electric and hybrid vehicles across Canada

Harbinger, a U.S.-based manufacturer of medium-duty electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, has expanded into Canada, making its trucks available for purchase in all provinces and territories.

The company is now accepting orders through its Canadian dealer, Safetek Specialty Vehicles, and plans to broaden its dealer network nationwide. Its first vehicles available in Canada will be electric step vans, with other models to follow.

“The industry reception to Harbinger vehicles to date demonstrates a strong appetite for durable, affordable and environmentally friendly alternatives to supplement gas and diesel fleets,” said John Harris, CEO of Harbinger. “The need for EV options is amplified in Canada, where federal EV mandates are more aggressive. Our vehicles not only help Canadian companies meet these mandates, but they are also best-in-class medium-duty vehicles.”

Canada’s federal targets call for zero-emission vehicles to make up 35 per cent of new medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sales by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2040. Federal incentives under the iMHZEV program offer up to $100,000 per vehicle, with additional funding available in British Columbia and Quebec.

“As a Canadian who has worked my entire career in the automotive and EV space, selling vehicles in Canada is a milestone for me,” said Phillip Weicker, co-founder and chief technology officer at Harbinger. “When we founded Harbinger, our goal was to build the best medium-duty vehicles and they just happen to be electric.”

Harbinger’s electric chassis is built in-house and designed for applications including delivery vans, emergency response vehicles and box trucks. The vehicles are engineered for cold-weather conditions and come with a 10-year warranty on key components.

The company estimates that fully electric vehicles can meet about 80 per cent of medium-duty use cases, with hybrid options offered for longer or unpredictable routes.
