U.S. to impose additional 10 per cent tariffs following Reagan ad

Following what he called a “fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” U.S. President Donald Trump announced it would impose an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.

The move comes after the Ontario government had been airing an ad showing former President Reagan saying he opposed the use of tariffs on economic allies. Trump, however, claims the ad uses selective audio and video and does not tell the entire story.

“The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address,” and “did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks,” Trump posted on social media. “The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court will come to their ‘rescue’ on Tariffs that they have used for years to hurt the United States.

“Ronald Reagan LOVED Tariffs for purposes of National Security and the Economy, but Canada said he didn’t! Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD.”

Trump said the advertisement is a “serious misrepresentation of the facts and a hostile act,” and would increase tariffs by 10 per cent over and above what has already been imposed as a result.

The Ontario government has since pulled the ad, but Trump has indicated that he is not interested in any further negotiations with Canada on a trade deal.

When the additional 10 per cent tariff is supposed to take effect remains unclear.
