FedEx founder Fred Smith dead at 80

Frederick W. Smith, founder and executive chairman of FedEx Corporation, died of natural causes on June 21 in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 80.

Smith, who launched Federal Express in 1973 with a fleet of 14 jets, revolutionized the shipping industry with his vision of overnight air delivery — an idea he conceived as a student at Yale College.

“Frederick W. Smith pioneered express delivery and connected the world, shaping global commerce as we know it,” said FedEx president and CEO Raj Subramaniam. “His legacy of innovation, leadership and philanthropy will continue to inspire future generations. I will miss not only his visionary leadership, but his trusted friendship and counsel.”

Born in Marks, Miss., and raised in Memphis, Smith served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps before founding FedEx. Under his leadership, the company grew into the world’s largest express transportation firm, employing over 500,000 people and moving more than 17 million shipments daily across 220 countries and territories.

Smith stepped down as CEO in 2022 but remained involved in the company and global policy issues until his death.

He is remembered for his contributions to business, veterans’ causes, public policy and his philanthropic efforts, especially in his hometown of Memphis.
