Light load: Volleyball in a shipping container

MUSKEGON, Michigan: A volleyball game was played on the shores of Lake Michigan. While that’s a normal activity in the summer and hardly newsworthy, the construction of the court was a bit more complicated than drawing a few lines in the sand.

Sixteen shipping containers were hauled to the lake shore and then stacked to make an elevated platform for the game.

The project was undertaken as a surprise for 15-year-old Meghan Haan. She’s a cancer survivor with a love of volleyball. During a press conference covered on a local television network, a business owner who heard about her medical ordeals explained he wanted to do something nice for her, so he worked with her school, classmates and volleyball teammates to bring about a surprise game on the temporary court.

Photos from the game are available here.
