Paid Waterloo, ON – Opening Doors to talk AI, IoT, and Analytics at the Dematic Software Centre of Excellence

July 15, 2019

When Waterloo became a recognized hub for software technology in Canada, Dematic took the opportunity to build a Software Centre of Excellence sensing that it would be the space where they could develop the technologies that would most influence the future of the supply chain industry.

Dematic, a leading supplier of automated technology, software, and services, employs 60 people in their Waterloo location. Many of whom focus on research and development opportunities to support the company’s wide customer base.

On June 26, Dematic opened the doors to this Centre of Excellence with a Software and Solutions Open House, welcoming in 40+ customers and supply chain industry professionals for the first time. Along with executive keynote speakers, the event included a tour of the R&D space, as well as the opportunity to learn about some of the next-gen technologies making the greatest impact in the supply chain industry today:

Mobile Automation – The latest in fully autonomous robots that move and transport items in production, warehouse, and DCs without manual intervention or permanent conveying systems.

Micro-Fulfillment – A rapid response order assembly system built to combat the challenges of e-comm and urbanization, with a small enough footprint to fit in the backroom of a retail store or production facility.

DematicIQ Insights – Performance optimizing software, unifying operational business data and machine data across the warehouse.

DematicIQ Virtual – A simulation and emulation platform that provides a digital environment to safely view software or operational changes without negatively affecting day-to-day operations.

DematicIQ Virtual – Facility Emulation Platform

“Software is critical in the drive toward higher levels of automation for our customers. Distribution, manufacturing, and warehousing operations are being forced to raise their levels of solution complexity, increase automation, minimize labour, squeeze out more throughput, all while managing the changing business climate and preparing for the future.” – Derek Lynch, Dematic Director of Sales, Canada.

In Waterloo, Dematic has positioned itself in areas like IoT (Internet of Things), Artificial Intelligence, Analytics, and Cloud technologies. There is a clear message that software is the key orchestrator in developing the right level of automation in any modern supply chain operation.

Pete Devenyi, Sr. VP of Global Products and Solutions, and Scott Wahl, Dematic VP of Global Software Solutions, kicked off the event by breaking down the unknowns behind these technologies with the question:

“How do we use technology to really help us manage operations?”

The response:

Availability: minimize impact of interruptions to planned operations

Performance: optimize process speed, labour productivity, equipment utilization

Quality: reduce frequency of inaccuracies in inventory or order fulfillment

“What we really want is to make the warehouse work; we want to achieve a better cycle time, better throughput, lower operating costs, easier handled exceptions and better productivity for the warehouse.”
