Alberta invests in rural transportation upgrades

Alberta’s government is investing more than $114 million in rural infrastructure upgrades, with a focus on improving transportation routes critical to the movement of goods.

A total of 51 projects across the province will receive funding through the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP), which supports repairs and upgrades to roads, bridges and airports in small and rural municipalities.

Among the key investments is a $3.5-million grant for an industrial rail extension project in Coaldale. The project will help local producers move southern Alberta-grown and manufactured goods to global markets in the agrifood processing sector.

In Newell County, a $2.6-million grant will support reconstruction of Range Road 150, a key future truck route that links Hwy 1 and Hwy 542, facilitating both residential and commercial traffic. Other major investments include $3.6 million to replace a bridge west of Innisfail and $2.5 million for airfield pavement upgrades at the Lac La Biche County airport.

“Rural Alberta is the backbone of our province, driving economic growth, feeding the world and strengthening our communities,” said Premier Danielle Smith. “These are the essentials that support families, attract investment and keep our rural economy moving.”

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen added, “We are making targeted investments… to ensure rural communities across the province have effective transportation and water infrastructure to support their continued growth and prosperity.”
