FORT ERIE: Canada’s third busiest commercial truck crossing now boasts a new primary inspection lane and a designated vehicle and cargo inspection system (VACIS).
The project at Fort Erie’s Peace Bridge includes an inspection lane and booth for Canada-bound commercial vehicles, as well as the VACIS area. The Government of Canada and the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority held a joint event today (Dec 10) celebrating the completion.
“These improvements will enhance the efficiency and security of this important trade corridor, while contributing to Canada’s long-term economic prosperity,” said Rob Nicholson, minister of justice and attorney general of Canada.
The project cost $2 million, with Ottawa contributing $1 million through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, which maintains the bridge, covered the other half of the costs.
“As an operator that sees border congestion every day, we appreciate the Government of Canada’s understanding of the importance of this international crossing,” said Ken Schoetz, the authority’s chairman.
The bridge, which connects Fort Erie, Ontario with Buffalo, New York, was used by more than one million trucks in 2009.
