Construction begins on Vancouver overpass; expected to increase trade capacity

Construction began Dec. 9 on the Holdom Overpass Project, a key infrastructure development spearheaded by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) in partnership with the City of Burnaby, CN and the federal government.

Once completed, the overpass is expected to improve traffic flow and safety for Burnaby residents, increase trade capacity and efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The new four-lane overpass will extend Holdom Avenue South over the rail corridor and Still Creek, linking it to Douglas Road.

“This project represents a significant step forward in improving transportation efficiency and trade capacity in Burnaby,” the VFPA said in a statement, adding that measures will be taken to minimize disruptions for local residents and businesses during construction.

The overpass is part of the broader Burnaby Rail Corridor Improvements Project, which aims to increase transportation efficiency and trade capacity through Port of Vancouver terminals on the North Shore. CN completed rail improvements in the corridor in 2022, paving the way for road infrastructure enhancements now underway.

The project has undergone technical analysis, design development and three phases of public engagement, with consultations with First Nations continuing as construction progresses.

The overpass is expected to open to the public in spring 2027 and reach completion later that fall.

The project is funded by the Government of Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and CN, while Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group Partnership is overseeing the design and construction.
