Montreal Port Authority eyes September start for Contrecœur expansion prep work

The Montreal Port Authority says it has filed a notice of intent to begin preliminary construction for the Port of Montreal’s Contrecœur expansion as early as Sept. 29, pending final approvals.

“This step allows us to meet the conditions required to move forward with a project that positions Quebec and Canada more strongly to diversify international trade,” said Julie Gascon, the authority’s president and CEO. “Once all the necessary approvals are in place, we’ll be ready to begin work on this major strategic project that is essential to the future of our supply chains.”

The initial work would focus on preparing the site for major construction, which could begin in 2026. The authority says all activities depend on receiving the required regulatory approvals, with project timelines and details posted on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry website.

The port authority says it will continue to work with stakeholders to mitigate impacts and meet project commitments. The expansion aims to boost container-handling capacity, with operations expected to start in 2030.
