Canada Post pauses CUPW negotiations to prepare new proposals

Canada Post has temporarily paused negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) after several days of talks it said failed to produce meaningful progress.

The Crown corporation said the break will allow it to prepare comprehensive proposals intended to move discussions forward constructively. Negotiations had resumed in late April after breaking off in March.

CUPW had called for mediated talks, but according to Canada Post, the union has either maintained or hardened its position on key issues, leaving “little room for progress.”

With the current collective agreements extended until May 22, Canada Post acknowledged the importance of reaching a resolution to avoid further labour disruption.

“Canada Post has therefore advised CUPW that it will use this pause to prepare proposals designed to help advance negotiations and achieve a much-needed resolution,” the corporation said in a statement. “Any offers we bring forward will reflect the corporation’s current realities.”

Canada Post said it remains committed to protecting and enhancing employee wages and benefits while adapting to Canadians’ evolving needs.

The company warned businesses of the potential for disruption if a deal is not reached by May 22 and pledged to provide updates to help partners plan accordingly.

The Retail Council of Canada (RCC) said it is monitoring the situation as several critical deadlines approach.

“RCC has been actively engaging with all stakeholders in recent weeks, urging them to work toward a resolution and consider binding arbitration if necessary,” the RCC said in a statement. “We are prepared to escalate our advocacy efforts should a disruption occur and will continue to keep members informed of any developments.”
