Unifor files for federal conciliation in dispute with CommerceLink Logistics

Unifor members at CommerceLink Logistics in Alberta and British Columbia have requested the appointment of federal conciliators, saying contract talks are stalled over scheduling, discipline and protections against contracting out.

“Our members are seeking a reasonable work-life balance,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “It’s not fair for them to be waiting around for last minute decisions by the employer on whether they are actually required to report on shift. Our members want to know when they’re reporting for work and when they’re getting home.”

Unifor says supply chain disruptions could hit Walmart customers in both provinces as early as March if the dispute is not resolved. CommerceLink Logistics was formerly Walmart Fleet ULC.

The union represents 150 drivers and yard co-ordinators in B.C. with Local 114, and 265 workers in Alberta with Local 4050. Both groups joined Unifor in late 2024 and early 2025, and all affected workers are full-time. The union has been negotiating separate first contracts for each group.

“CommerceLink has said they want to be able to rely on the use of owner-operators,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “There’s no way we are going to allow them carte blanche to contract any of our work. We will stand behind our members.”

Once conciliators are appointed, both sides will work to schedule dates to resume bargaining.
