Unifor members at CN vote to strike if no deal reached

Members of Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100 at Canadian National Railway (CN) have delivered a decisive strike mandate, with 96 per cent of Local 100 members and 97 per cent of Council 4000 members voting in favour of job action if an agreement is not reached by Jan. 1, 2025.

“This overwhelming vote sends a clear message to CN that our members are united and prepared to take action to achieve the fair treatment and respect they deserve,” said Lana Payne, Unifor’s national president. “Our members have had enough of concessions that erode their rights and livelihoods. They are standing strong for a contract that reflects their value and the critical role they play in CN’s success.”

The vote highlights mounting frustration among CN workers, who are calling for improved job security, fair compensation, and better working conditions.

“CN has profited enormously from the dedication and hard work of our members,” said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor’s Quebec director. “Yet it continues to dismiss their most basic needs. Our members are sending a unified message that they expect the employer to show meaningful progress at the bargaining table.”

Negotiations between Unifor and CN are set to resume in Montreal from Nov. 25 to Dec. 8.
