The B.C. Labour Relations Board has certified Unifor as the official union representing workers at the Amazon facility in Delta, B.C., following what the board deemed significant employer interference in the organizing process.
“Workers at Amazon organized against very difficult odds, but they’ve slayed the giant,” said Unifor national president Lana Payne. “This ruling sends a clear message to companies that bullying workers will only backfire in the end.”
Unifor said the board found Amazon’s actions during the union drive to be egregious enough to undermine the process and determined that certification was the only reasonable remedy. The ruling allows newly unionized workers to begin negotiating their first collective agreement.
“Warehouse workers are better off with a union,” said Unifor western regional director Gavin McGarrigle. “Unifor will continue to provide support to workers at Amazon facilities across the country to improve working conditions and win fair pay.”
The decision marks a milestone in Unifor’s Warehouse Workers Unite campaign, which has also helped workers at several Walmart locations successfully unionize.
