Two months after being ordered by the Canada Industrial Relations Board to resume operations, the Port of Montreal has announced that all activities are back to normal.
The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) said the recovery was made possible by the efforts of its teams and logistics partners, who worked through the holiday season to clear a significant backlog and stabilize operations.
Since the resumption, port workers and partners have handled 52 container ships, moved nearly 197,985 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), transported 137 freight cars of grain and accommodated around 2,300 truck drivers daily across terminals. Backlogs, including 13,350 TEUs and 28,000 feet of export freight cars, were cleared faster than expected, according to the MPA.
“Regaining control after several weeks of uncertainty requires a major effort from our teams and each of our partners, as tens of thousands of containers were expected,” said MPA president and CEO Julie Gascon. “The hard work of all our logistics partners was mission-critical to make sure the supply chain flowed smoothly again.”
