Ontario invests over $7M to boost critical minerals supply chain

The Ontario government is investing more than $7 million in 17 projects to drive research, development and commercialization of critical mineral technologies essential for battery and electric vehicle manufacturing.

The funding, delivered through the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund, aims to strengthen Ontario’s supply chain and create jobs in the mining sector.

“As our economy grows with an increased need for critical minerals, our government is strengthening a made-in-Ontario supply chain, ready to fuel the technologies of tomorrow,” said George Pirie, minister of mines.

Among the projects receiving support are:

  • $495,740 for NetZero Metals to develop low-carbon nickel processing in Timmins.
  • $223,552 for EV Nickel Inc. to advance bioleaching technology and design a pilot plant in Timmins to produce clean, high-grade nickel.

Stephen Crawford, associate minister of mines, emphasized the initiative’s broader impact. “It strengthens critical minerals production, drives innovation, boosts global competitiveness, and creates opportunities for workers, businesses and Indigenous communities.”

The projects will support key sectors such as aerospace, defence and energy, while ensuring Ontario’s leadership in sustainable growth and advanced manufacturing.
