At St. John’s-based Oceanex— as a leading provider of transportation services to and from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador with regional offices throughout Eastern Canada and over 1,000 direct and indirect workers—customer satisfaction, safety and continuous improvement aren’t just words; they’re words we live by.
The results are clear in the reliability and consistency of our service. Transporting approximately 50 per cent of the freight – including 85 per cent of all new automobiles moving to the province and over 75 per cent of all goods – for the Avalon Peninsula, our more than 97 per cent on-time performance speaks for itself.
The results are real in the range of key industries that choose us to transport essential goods to the province and from here to destinations across North America, including retailers, wholesalers, distributors, pharmacies, hospitals, automotive dealerships, builders, grocery companies, seafood producers, recyclers and other transportation providers.
And they are real in the care we take with the ships, terminals, trucks and equipment we own and operate—including our fleet of three Canadian-owned, flagged and crewed, ice-class container/con-ro ships—and our comprehensive, door-to-door/pier-to-pier services for containerized full load (FL) and less-than-truckload (LTL), rolling freight (vans/trailers), over dimensional and project cargo and automobile transport.
In all this, safety is key. Oceanex is fully committed to developing a best-in-class safety culture. By promoting health and safety in the workplace, we continuously strive to improve our safety performance.
Innovation is also vital here at Oceanex. We have designed a unique marine-rated 53-foot refrigerated container built for our specific market conditions. Each unit is equipped with a dedicated real-time monitoring device, allowing for 24/7 tracking, temperature monitoring and control. Our refrigerated containers operate on a dual-energy source, both electric and diesel, which allows us the flexibility to operate safely at all times. Furthermore, these units allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and provide a greener, more environmentally responsible alternative.
In fact, we are at the forefront of green transportation solutions. Our investment has been significant in recent years. Not only have we transitioned to low-sulphur fuel for our three vessels, our partnership with the Montreal Port Authority and Quebec Stevedoring Limited (QSL) to develop the first domestic “green shipping corridor” between Quebec and Newfoundland, aims to eliminate carbon emissions on a crucial shipping route that carries close to 500,000 tonnes of cargo a year.
None of this is by accident. Open communications and a commitment to both customer and employee satisfaction and engagement is how we’ve been able to serve eastern Canada for more than 100 years, and why we are, today, a platinum member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies. Customer satisfaction, safety and continuous improvement are our words we live by.
