CPKC releases climate reports outlining emissions progress, strategy

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) says it has released two new reports detailing its approach to climate governance and progress toward reducing emissions across its rail network.

The company published its Climate Insights report, which outlines its strategic approach to climate change, alongside its second Climate Mileposts report, focused on performance and progress.

“These reports showcase CPKC’s dedication to responsible growth and leadership in climate action, reflecting our vision for a more sustainable rail network across North America through innovation and environmental stewardship,” said Keith Creel, CPKC president and chief executive officer.

CPKC said the Climate Insights report replaces its previous 2021 Climate Strategy and 2023 Commitment to Climate Action, consolidating its approach to governance, risk management and emissions reduction into a single document.

The Climate Mileposts report highlights steps taken to lower carbon emissions and improve resilience, including deploying 100 new Tier 4 locomotives, expanding energy management technologies and continuing testing and infrastructure development for hydrogen-powered locomotives.

The report also includes results from a climate scenario analysis across the combined CPKC network and outlines infrastructure upgrades such as siding extensions, track improvements and advanced inspection technologies aimed at boosting capacity and resilience.
