The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Wallenius Wilhelmsen have completed upgrades at the Annacis Auto Terminal in Delta, B.C., as part of the Annacis Auto Terminal Optimization Project.
Construction began in 2022 and involved consolidating the Annacis and Richmond auto terminals into a single expanded facility at Annacis. The improvements boost annual vehicle handling capacity by 36 per cent, allowing the terminal to process up to 480,000 vehicles.
The project also includes 60 new rail car spots through expanded terminal rail yards, a new vehicle processing building, and eight electric vehicle charging stations. Officials say the upgrades will free up valuable industrial land for future trade-enabling uses.
“Last year marked a record year for auto trade through the Port of Vancouver, and the completion of these on-terminal works is a significant step forward in ensuring we are well-positioned to continue enabling Canada’s auto trade through the port,” said Jennifer Natland, vice-president of properties and environment for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “We would like to thank our terminal operator—Wallenius Wilhelmsen—and the Government of Canada for their partnership in successfully reaching this milestone on this important project.”
The project is jointly funded by the federal government through the National Trade Corridors Fund, the port authority and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. It is part of the Greater Vancouver Gateway 2030 strategy.
In 2024, Canadian auto sales rose eight per cent, with the Port of Vancouver importing nearly 470,000 vehicles, up three per cent from 2023 and setting a new record.
