Michael Berry, of Qualicum Beach, B.C., has been appointed to the board of directors of the Nanaimo Port Authority, effective July 1, 2002, for a period of three years, announced Transport Minister David Collenette.

Berry began his career with the Canadian Foreign Service (now a part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade), serving as high commissioner to Singapore, high commissioner to Australia, and ambassador to the Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Since retiring from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade after 35 years of service, he founded BERRY & ASSOCIATES, a consulting company that provides advice to Canadian companies in the export market.

Nanaimo is a major entry point for vehicle transportation and cargo on Vancouver Island. In 2000, more than two million vehicles and 5.7 million passengers moved through the port. Total cargo traffic in 2000 was 2.2 million metric tonnes. The main imports were petroleum and forest products, while the main exports were lumber, pulp, and other related forest products.
