Atlantic provinces agree to standardize trucking regs

The Atlantic provinces have agreed in principle to establish uniform trucking regulations.

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Newfoundland will alter their weight and dimension restrictions by October, providing more consistent enforcement throughout the East Coast.

Nova Scotia Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Ron Russell, says “Reducing interprovincial trade barriers with our partners in the Atlantic region will help us increase the level of economic activity within the region. Standard rules will make it easier and less expensive to ship goods in the Atlantic region. That should stimulate economic development and, hopefully, lower costs for consumers.”

The proposal will provide a transition period to allow trucking companies to phase out equipment that will no longer be in compliance with the new regulations.
