MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Years ago, intermodal movements were only cost and service effective on freight movements of 1500 miles and up. But intermodal transportation has gone through a renaissance over the last decade and this number is now well below 1000 miles.

Still, for many companies, intermodal transportation remains a niche component of their operations with intermodal revenues representing about 3% of the total North American freight spend.
