Canada Maritime’s new weekly transpacific service linking key markets in Canada, the USA and Asia will be calling at the Fraser Surrey Dock within the Fraser River Port.
Just south of Vancouver, the port (which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year) handles more than 22 million tonnes of cargo each year. Last year container throughput doubled to 100,544 teu and international cargo volumes grew by 51% to 4,548,708 tonnes in 2002.
In its first move into the transpacific trades Canada Maritime is taking slots on the weekly, fixed-day service operated by fellow CP Ships brand Lykes Lines, which allows Canada Maritime to provide connections between
Fraser Surrey Dock, Shanghai, Qingdao, Pusan and Tokyo.
“Business is booming at Fraser River Port, and we hope to contribute to that,” observed Terry Burrows, Senior Vice President of CP Ships. “The transit times we will offer will be amongst the best to Asia and we are convinced that shippers in North America will respond to a premier product
modelled on our transAtlantic Montreal Gateway Service.
“Our Pacific Gateway Service through Fraser Surrey Dock offers faster links to Asia for shippers who are used to longer sea voyages from west coast ports of the USA,” Mr Burrows said. “The intermodal connections from the
port are second to none.”
