Canadian exports rising

A general resurgence in the automobile industry, combined with soaring exports of energy products, helped to boost merchandise exports for the month of April.

Canadian companies exported products worth more than $37 billion in April, a 1.7 per cent increase from March. Statistics Canada credits the jump to the strength of higher exports of natural gas, passenger cars and lumber. This marks the second straight monthly rise in exports.

Import levels hovering around $30.7 billion, with main import advances in the automotive, agricultural and fishing sectors.

As a result, Canada’s overall trade surplus increased to just over $6.3 billion.
