More than 25 U.S. carriers, including New York-based Atlas, FedEx, United Parcel Service Inc. andNorthwest Airlines Corp., are participants in the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, which provides aircraft to supplement military planes in times of conflict.
To this end, Seattle-based Boeing is sending several 747 freighters to support U.S. military operations.
Atlas Air, the largest shipper of freight for other airlines will be providing four 747s that had been in storage to carry general military cargo, while FedEx has said it will do one flight for the U.S. military using a 747 leased from Atlas.
