CN announces plan for intermodal terminal west of Toronto
Canadian National will build a major intermodal terminal adjacent to its Halton Subdivision south of Milton, located 20 miles west of Toronto. Milton has ready access to major highways reaching key industrial and commercial areas in the Toronto region. The new terminal will be located between Tremaine Road, First Line, Britannia Road and Lower Base Line and is scheduled to open in late-2002. CN’s existing intermodal terminal operation in the Toronto area is located in Brampton, Ont., south of Highway 7 and Airport Road.
CN says it is increasing its intermodal terminal capacity to accommodate its fast-growing intermodal business and to reduce truck traffic.
The company transported 1.12 million intermodal units last year, an increase of 13 per cent, and saw its intermodal revenue grow by the same amount to $919 million.
The new Milton terminal will initially employ about 100 people and occupy about 100 acres of land. CN will brief area residents, the Regional Municipality of Halton, the Town of Milton, Transport Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency about its terminal plan.
