C.H. Robinson is acquiring Prime Distribution Services, a provider of retail consolidation services in North America, from Roadrunner Transportation. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval. Prime had US$108.7 million in total revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2019. C.H. Robinson intends to purchase Prime for approximately $225 million in cash. The acquisition will be financed through cash on hand and funds drawn from C.H. Robinson’s existing credit facilities. Prime provides distribution, fulfillment and inventory management, and currently operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Roadrunner Transportation. Founded in 1990 and headquartered in Plainfield, Indiana, Prime employs approximately 270 people and has five fulfillment and distribution facilities totaling approximately 2.6 million square feet across the United States. It currently serves approximately 140 customers.
RoadOne IntermodaLogistics is acquiring Savannah, Georgia-based Crown Transportation to expand its U.S. Southeast intermodal drayage and logistics operations and overall North American network. Going forward the company’s name will be Crown IntermodaLogistics. Crown’s owner and president, Rick Prevatt, and COO, Steven McAllister, will continue to run the company. The acquisition adds a container terminal in Savannah and 500,000-plus square feet of transload and warehousing capacity, as well as 100 trucks to serve port drayage and the transload operations in this area. In addition, Crown specializes in overweight cargo handling and transloading.
Nordstrom will deploy parcel sortation systems from Tompkins Robotics in its distribution operations at several sites throughout the U.S. The robotic solution uses Tompkins Robotics’ t-Sort autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to handle unit and item sortation of e-commerce and store fulfillment orders as well as larger t-Sort Plus robots for parcel and carton shipping sortation to outbound carriers and modes. The retailer is currently using the t-Sort robotic solution to fulfill West Coast beauty orders. t-Sort is a portable, scalable robotic sortation system that operates like a tilt tray or crossbelt sorter without a fixed track, consisting of free moving robots along the shortest route possible to sort items and packages by shipping order, destination or service level. It is capable of handling parcels and units as small as a penny and up to 66 pounds. When combined with new storage and retrieval automation, the integrated solution uses up to 90 percent less footprint within Nordstrom’s distribution facilities.
