FedEx and Canada Customs work together to combat smuggling

by Canadian Shipper

Canada Customs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Federal Express Canada Ltd. under the CCRA’s Partners in Protection Program.

The MOU is aimed at combatting contraband smuggling, and includes commitments to promote increased security at locations where risks have been identified, assist in efforts to detect and investigate smuggling attempts, facilitate the exchange of information, heighten awareness of problems related to drug smuggling and other contraband, and discuss security procedures and other matters of mutual interest.

FedEx, as a participant in the program, will benefit from advice and consultation with CCRA concerning the application of new customs legislation and procedures relating to contraband issues, as well as improved communications between its employees and CCRA staff.

The program also allows low-risk goods to move more quickly as it will be easier to target higher risk goods. FedEx’s EXPRESSCLEAR program, launched in 1993, already allows Canada Customs to start clearance procedures for goods while they are still in transit.
