The St. Lawrence Seaway officially open for its 67th navigation season March 25, allowing vessels to once again transport goods through the vital trade corridor.
The first ship to pass through, the ATB Everlast and Norman McLeod, marked the ceremonial start of the 2025 season. Nearly 37 million tonnes of cargo moved through the Seaway last year, including grain, potash, and steel.
Jim Athanasiou, president and CEO of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, said the system is ready to move more cargo and support North American supply chains.
“The Seaway is open and has the capacity today to move more cargo, strengthen supply chains, and support trade across North America,” he said.
The 2024 season was the longest on record, underscoring the waterway’s adaptability. Officials say they remain focused on innovation and sustainability as the new season gets underway.
