J.D. Smith and Sons provides signed delivery documents on Web

J.D. Smith and Sons has introduced online imaging technology which allows customers to view signed delivery documents on its Web site at www.jdsmith.com.

The company is one of the first full-service logistics management companies in Canada to offer this capability; the newest addition to its state-of-the-art, web-based tracking service.

"For the first time ever, our customers can view scanned images of bills of lading on our Web site, download and print them," explains Cam Arntsen, Information Systems Manager at J.D. Smith. "This gives our customers flexibility, convenience and speed of information that’s critical to managing their supply chain."

Arntsen adds that this will also reduce some of the motor carrier’s administrative workload allowing it to enhance customer service in other areas. J.D. Smith’s customer service representatives have used document imaging for more than four years, to deliver high quality images of signed proofs of delivery to customers by e-mail or fax. Now, with the click of a button, customers can quickly access this information independently.

The software that supports this new functionality was developed in partnership with Maddocks Systems Inc. of Langley, British Columbia, a provider of fleet management and trucking dispatch software solutions for over 20 years. The new product provides an interface between Maddocks’ TM4Web product (which enables the company’s customers to make pick up requests and trace loads) and J.D. Smith’s existing Imaging System, Synergize. Synergize was developed by Microdea Inc., of Richmond Hill, Ontario, imaging partner of Maddocks.

J.D. Smith has offered a full suite of Web access functions to its warehousing and transportation customers and interline carrier partners since early 2000. Its leading-edge warehouse management system, WarehouseLogic, developed by Markham, Ontario-based Delfour Corporation, gives customers full control of their inventory through a web tool called eVista. eVista allows J.D. Smith customers to make inventory queries, enter orders and check order status.

"By harnessing leading-edge technology, we provide our customers with the information they need to improve product flow across their supply chains. They can lookup inventory, create orders, trace orders, see exactly when loads were picked up and delivered," explains Arntsen. In the same way, the company’s interline carrier partners can access and input information to ensure a seamless, one stop transportation solution.
