Kuehne & Nagel says it will now use the newly developed world-wide XML standard (extensible mark-up language), to process international logistics and forwarding orders, making it among the first companies in the industry to utilize the new standard.
“The introduction of the XML standard will result in a substantial reduction of cost, because data transmission via the internet can be executed at a much lower cost and is therefore also affordable for small and middle sized companies,” said Thomas Engel, CIO at Kuehne & Nagel.
In recent months, Kuehne & Nagel assisted in developing the definition of the XML standard as well as the industry-specific definition of document types (DTD). The DTD-standard for international forwarding was developed in co-operation with the international design team EDIFOR, established for this purpose by the German Logistics Federation (Bundesverband Spedition und Logistik).
