TRENTON, Ontario—Via Rail passengers on lines linking Toronto to Ottawa and Montreal are facing delays today after a fatal crash between a CN freight train and a vehicle in eastern Ontario. The vehicle’s driver was killed in the crash that happened at about 10 a.m. just west of Trenton, Ont.
Via Rail spokeswoman Mylene Belanger says buses have started to shuttle passengers who were travelling both ways on the busy Ottawa-Toronto and Montreal-Toronto lines to their destinations.
She says so far five trains have been affected and passengers were held up in Belleville, Cobourg and Kingston.
Belanger adds Via Rail is not yet sure if service on later trains will be impacted.
Jim Feeny of CN Rail says no one was injured on the freight train, which was travelling from Montreal to Toronto and had two locomotives.
Feeny says the rail service on two parallel tracks was suspended for a coroner’s investigation, but one track has been released and is now usable.
Quinte West fire Chief John Whalen says the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene.
He adds there were no other people in the vehicle and firefighters were working to extricate the man’s body from the car.
