New ship design for multi cargo carriage

by Canadian Shipper

NYK group company Hinode Kisen Co. Ltd has developed a concept for a new multipurpose vessel capable of simultaneously transporting containerised, conventional and ro-ro cargoes.

Hinode Kisen Co. Ltd. has applied for a patent on the new type freighter.
Two new vessels have been commissioned for the second half of next year and construction work on the new freighters will begin soon at Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd.

The concept emerged from some 20 specially designed containerships that NYK built between 1995 and 1998, having a capacity of 900 TEU, 600 units of cars, and 10,000 kt of steel cargo loaded into holds.

The new-concept freighter has, as a prime feature, a rampway in the stern enabling motor-driven cargoes to load into the holds for effective use of space above the engines for ro-ro cargoes.

Ro-ro cargoes can be handled separately even while containerized and conventional cargoes are being handled above the holds by two 40-ton deck cranes, installed aboard the vessel. This permits the simultaneous handling of three different types of cargoes.
