Port Metro Vancouver provides update on Deltaport improvement project

VANCOUVER, B.C.–Port Metro Vancouver has provided  a December update on its Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project, which is a series of improvements to the existing Deltaport Terminal to increase container capacity by 600,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Port Metro Vancouver is working with the Province of B.C. and Deltaport operator, GCT Canada (formerly TSI Terminal Systems Inc.), to complete this project. The project is being delivered under Port Metro Vancouver’s Container Capacity Improvement Program, which is aligned with the provincial and federal strategies to strengthen Canada’s trade through the Asia-Pacific Gateway.

The causeway overpass is the first component of the Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project to be completed. The new overpass separates road and rail traffic, improving the flow of trucks and trains accessing the terminal, reducing truck and vehicle idling and increasing safety, as well as contributing an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 TEUs of additional capacity annually at Deltaport.

Construction of the overpass began in March 2013 and was completed on time and within budget. The $44.7 million overpass was delivered by Port Metro Vancouver with a $19.9 million funding contribution from the Government of Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Transportation Infrastructure Fund. The AsiaPacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative is focused on enhancing the movement of goods and people between North America and AsiaThe remaining components of the Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project include:

  1. Reconfiguration of rail track and additional container handling equipment within the Deltaport Terminal (led by GCT Canada), and 2)Rail improvements within the existing rail right-of-way and within a portion of the Option Lands

west of Arthur Drive (led by BC Rail and user railways). Planning for each of these elements is still underway, and project updates will be provided once information is available. Construction of all project components is expected to be completed by the end of 2016, in time to meet the need for additional container capacity, said the update.
