Transborder freight still the big growth area for motor carriers (June 01, 2001)

The nation’s for-hire carriers carried 133.3 million metric tonnes of freight in the first half of 2000, a marginal decrease from the 133.6 million in 1999, the latest figures from Statistics Canada indicate.

Transborder freight on a growth tear since the mid 90s, continued its impressive growth with a 7.4 percent gain during the period. This offset the effect of a three percent decrease in domestic tonnage.

Domestic activities still account for 72 percent of total tonnage and 77 per cent of total shipments, but the transborder market is where for-hire carriers are making their money. That market generated 48 percent of total revenues and 50 percent of total loaded kilometres for these carriers.
