Blitz to target truck driver misclassification

The federal government is launching an inspection blitz targeting truck driver misclassification in Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area in the coming weeks.

The Labour Program says the effort aims to crack down on employers who illegally classify workers as independent contractors instead of employees, a practice that removes access to minimum wage, paid leave, health and safety protections, Employment Insurance and the Canada Pension Plan. Ottawa says misclassification also creates unfair competition for compliant trucking companies.

Inspectors will look for violations of federal labour standards and workplace safety rules. When misclassification is suspected, officials say full investigations will follow and penalties will be issued quickly where violations are confirmed.

Information from the blitz will also be shared with the Canada Revenue Agency to support coordinated enforcement.

“Canada’s trucking industry is built by devoted workers who keep our communities and economy moving. Misclassification is not only exploitation, but also illegal – plain and simple. This inspection blitz is about finding employers who are breaking the law and holding them accountable so every truck driver in Canada is treated fairly,” said Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu. “A strong and resilient workforce is built on equal opportunities, and fostering inclusivity is essential to strengthening Canada’s economy.”

Labour Secretary of State John Zerucelli said the message to employers is clear. “Workers should never lose pay, benefits or safety protections because an employer is trying to cut corners. This blitz sends a strong message: if you violate federal labour laws, there will be consequences. We will continue strengthening compliance and enforcing the rules to protect workers across Canada.”
